Redact PDF
Hide sensitive content permanently.
Draw black rectangles over any area on any page. Redactions are burned into the PDF — the underlying text and images are removed, not merely covered.
How it works
How to permanently redact a PDF
- 1
Open the PDF and select redaction mode
Upload your PDF and switch to the redaction tool. Pages render in your browser; no data is sent anywhere during this step.
- 2
Draw boxes over content to redact
Click and drag to draw black redaction boxes over any text, images, or areas you want removed. Draw as many boxes as needed across any pages.
- 3
Apply and download
Click "Apply Redactions" to permanently burn the black boxes into the PDF, removing the underlying content. Download the redacted file - the original data cannot be recovered.
True PDF redaction permanently destroys the content beneath the black box - it does not simply draw a black rectangle on top of text that can be selected, copied, or revealed by changing the layer visibility. PDFsuite flattens the redaction into the page content itself, so there is no hidden layer and no recoverable data. The process runs entirely in your browser, keeping your sensitive documents completely private and offline.
Lawyers, HR professionals, healthcare workers, and journalists routinely need to share documents while protecting specific private details - names, account numbers, social security numbers, medical diagnoses, or confidential sources. PDFsuite lets you mark those regions visually, preview the result, and then commit the redaction in one click. Because no file upload is involved, you can redact highly confidential material without worrying about it transiting a third-party server.
The tool is free and works on any modern browser without installing software or creating an account. After applying redactions, the downloaded PDF is a clean, standard file compatible with Adobe Acrobat, Preview, and every major viewer. Use it for FOIA responses, legal discovery, medical record sharing, or any workflow where irreversible removal of sensitive content is a compliance or privacy requirement.
FAQ
Common questions
- Is the redacted content truly gone or just covered up?
- It is truly gone. PDFsuite does not apply a visual overlay - it burns the redaction into the page at the PDF content stream level, removing the underlying text and image data. There is no hidden layer, no text behind the black box, and no way to undo the redaction in the output file.
- Can I redact scanned PDFs or image-only pages?
- Yes. Because redaction draws over the rendered page image and permanently overwrites that region, it works equally well on scanned documents, image-based PDFs, and files with embedded fonts. The black box replaces whatever content was rendered in that area.
- Does PDFsuite upload my document to perform the redaction?
- No. Everything happens locally in your browser. Your PDF is never sent to any server, which makes this tool appropriate for legally privileged documents, patient health information, financial records, and other sensitive material where upload to a cloud service would be a compliance risk.
