How to add text to a PDF

Open your PDF
Drop a PDF onto the window or choose one. It opens on this device - the file is not uploaded anywhere.

Add and adjust your text
Choose Text, click the spot on the page and type. Switch to Select to drag a box, pull its handle to change the width, or double-click it to change the words. Font, size, color, bold, italic and alignment are in the panel on the right.

Save the edited PDF
Choose Save PDF. Your words are written into the page as real text in an embedded font, so they print, search and copy like the rest of the document.

Filling in a date, correcting a label, adding a note to a form or putting a name on a certificate usually means finding the original file. The Edit PDF tool lets you type straight onto any page instead. Each text box is placed exactly where you click, and you can move it, resize it and change its style until it looks right.

The text is not an image pasted on top. It is written into the page with an embedded font (Noto Sans, Noto Serif or Noto Sans Mono), which covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic scripts. Only the letters you used are embedded, so the file stays small, and the words can be searched and copied in Preview, Acrobat, Chrome and any other PDF reader.

Everything happens on your device. The PDF is opened and saved by an engine that runs in your browser or in the Mac app, and nothing about the document is sent anywhere. Undo and redo cover every change, and you can keep editing after saving.

Common questions

Can I change text that is already in the PDF?: Not in this version. The editor adds new text boxes on the page. Changing the words that were already in the document is planned for a later update.
Which fonts and languages are supported?: You can choose Noto Sans, Noto Serif or Noto Sans Mono, with bold and italic (Mono has no italic). They cover Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. If you type a character these fonts do not have, such as an emoji, it is left out and the editor tells you which characters were skipped.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?: No. The document is opened, edited and saved on your device. The status bar says so on every tool, and the editor works offline once it has loaded.
Can I undo a change?: Yes. Use the Undo and Redo buttons in the toolbar, or Command-Z and Shift-Command-Z (Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y on Windows). Moving, resizing, restyling, editing and deleting a text box can all be undone.
